I Once Was Lost....
Confessions of a Reluctant GPS Convert
I used to get lost all the time.
No, really; I got lost ALL THE TIME,- everywhere,- even in the city I've lived in for the past 7 years.
And I don't just mean that I turned down a wrong street once in a while, - I've been known to get lost on the way to places I've been a hundred times before.

I was extremely resistant to what my husband called 'The Great GPS Experiment'. He bought a GPS unit with voice navigation and installed it in my car. He snickered as he advised me to take it with me "everywhere I went", because the tracking device he planned on hiding in my purse wouldn't be delivered for a few more weeks.
I did not share his amusement.
"I need to learn for myself," I said. "A GPS will make me lazy and dependent, and I won't be able to fend for myself anymore."
"You can't fend for yourself now!" he snorted.
So, with great reluctance, I gave in. I watched as my husband showed me how to use my new GPS, and listened suspiciously as a woman's pleasant voice began to direct us. He loved it from the first moment; I, in my stubbornness, wasn't sold right away.
Then came the day that I had to drop my mother-in-law off at my brother-in-law's house. I had to drive out of my narrow comfort zone, about 20 miles north into unfamilar territory.
OK, it was only 20 miles from my home, but it might as well have been the moon. I'd never attempted such a journey alone!
But thanks to my GPS device, I arrived without incident, without a single moment of panic!
Thanks to my lovely GPS unit, there would be no embarrassing story of my incompetence passed around at the next
family gathering.
I was cool and in control. IT FELT.... GOOD!

Now my GPS is my best friend. I can go anywhere! I can FLY like a bird, admiring the view. No more worry, no more panic! No more deep, insurmountable embarrassment! FREEDOM!
I do realize that the average person isn't as directionally challenged as I am. (or was) But, if someone you know could get even a fraction of the peace of mind my GPS has given me, it would be criminal of you not to show him or her that there IS a light at the end if the tunnel, - it's the blinking LED light of their new GPS unit, making sure they never get lost again!
